‼️ Exclusion Criteria for Dr. Bernie's Behavioral Health Coaching

While behavioral health coaching can provide valuable support, it is NOT a substitute for therapy, medical care, or crisis intervention.

Coaching is NOT suitable for addressing the following concerns:

  • Serious mental health conditions: Conditions like severe depression, personality disorders, eating disorders, unmanaged bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or other significant mental health diagnoses that require specialized treatment. Clients with these concerns may be eligible for behavioral health coaching IF they are currently receiving mental health services from a counselor/therapist AND have not experienced active or passive suicidal/homicidal ideation or self-harm within the past year.

  • Substance abuse or addiction: Coaching is not appropriate for individuals struggling with addiction or substance use disorders, which require a clinical approach.

  • Crisis situations: If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts, self-harm, or any immediate crisis, it’s important to seek professional medical help or emergency services. Coaching IS NOT a crisis response service.

  • Unresolved trauma: Coaching does not replace therapy for those dealing with past trauma, abuse, or complex PTSD, which should be addressed with a licensed therapist.

‼️ Understanding the Limits of Coaching

Coaching is a powerful tool for personal growth, goal achievement, and positive change, but it’s important to understand its limitations.

Coaching is not a substitute for therapy, counseling, or medical treatment. Coaches do not diagnose or treat mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, trauma, or addiction. While coaching can help you develop healthier habits and perspectives, deep-rooted emotional issues, past traumas, and mental health disorders should be addressed with licensed professionals in their respective fields, e.g. counseling, social work, psychology, psychiatry.

Coaching focuses on the present and future, helping you identify goals, overcome obstacles, and unlock your potential. If you're looking to heal emotional wounds, process past trauma, or manage a mental health diagnosis, therapy or counseling is the appropriate avenue. Coaching complements, but does not replace, these important services.

At drbernie.coach, I am committed to providing you with the right support for your needs. If it becomes clear that counseling or therapy may be more suitable for your situation, I will guide you toward the appropriate resources, and we may decide to pause or end coaching at that time.
